“Kinky Boots”

With songs by Cyndi Lauper, this musical celebration about friendships and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind was inspired by true events. “Kinky Boots” takes you from a shoe factory to the catwalks of Milan. It won six Tony Awards including best musical, best score and best choreography.

Beatlemajesty

It’ll be a hard day’s night at the Gallo Center as Beatles tribute band Beatlemajesty returns to the downtown theater in a benefit for Stanislaus County foster children at this summer’s Royal Family Kids’ Camp. The group features the same performers who starred on Broadway in the hit “Beatlemania.”

“Valley Focus”

This exhibit of regional photographers is part of a series of annual shows at the Carnegie Arts Center that celebrate the artistic creativity found in the Central Valley. Entries from throughout California are part of the exhibition, juried by photographer Ted Orland.

MLK Commemoration

Modesto’s 24th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration features keynote speaker Dolores Huerta, famed labor activist and leader of the Chicano civil rights movement who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. Huerta will take part in a Q&A session at the end of the program.

Merced Shakespearefest begins its 17th season with the Bard’s political tragedy “Coriolanus” on the Merced College stage. A play about loyalty and revenge in politics, it shows how small differences can sometimes be between enemies and friends, and how easily they can change from one to the other.

“The Hustler”

The Modesto Film Society brings the 1961 classic film “The Hustler” starring Paul Newman as pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson to the State Theatre in downtown Modesto. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards including best picture, best actor, best actress and best director.

StringQuake

The Modesto Community Concert Association brings Bay Area trio StringQuake to the Gallo Center for the next concert in its season series. The trio uses unusual instrumentation, electric harp, cello and percussion to explore sounds inspired by Greece, India, Africa and the Americas.
