In brief: High school programs and more
Several area schools are presenting stage and concert productions in the community this week.
First, Modesto Christian Performing Arts continues its multishow presentation of the Broadway musical “Mary Poppins.” Shows started Thursday and continue at 7 p.m. Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday in the Foster Family Theater at the Gallo Center for the Arts. On Saturday, Johansen Performing Arts presents “The Roarin’ Twenties” at the State Theatre. The Johansen High Jazz and Concert bands will perform a 1920s-themed concert. The show will include the screening of a silent film by Johansen students and performances of student compositions. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students. Women’s music fest fundraiser planned
A concert to raise funds for this year’s Northern California Women’s Music Festival is set for May 16 at the Queen Bean coffeehouse in downtown Modesto.
Performing will be Mattea Overstreet, Kayla Just, Josephine Johnson, Iraya Cress, Dyli, Emily O’Neil, Midnight Mover and Erin Odessa. There will be a silent auction with prizes including photo packages, wine baskets, art and more. Attendees also have a chance to bid for a VIP meet-and-greet ticket with singers Lita Ford and Tracy Bonham, headliners of the Oct. 23-24 music festival celebrating female performers.

MJC Concert Choir
The Modesto Junior College Concert Choir presents its Spring Choral Concert on Monday.
The program will include excerpts from Mozart and Fauré requiems, American folk songs and spirituals, and Broadway musicals and operas. The choir will be conducted by Cherrie Llewellyn and accompanied by pianist Yan Yan Chan. Guest performances will include the Johansen High School Concert Choir under the direction of Jennifer Champeaux, and soloists Sandra Rubalcava, Letitia Miller and Katie Stephanic.
The show will be a celebration of the lives of speech professor Charles Mullins, emeritus music professor Lewis Woodward, music supporter Pamela Aguilar and former choir member Tyron Payton. A video presentation by Wes Page will be shown in their memory during the performance.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on the East Campus. Tickets are $5 general, $1 students/seniors. Call (209) 575-6262.
Columbia College Community Chorus
The Columbia College Community Chorus with orchestra presents the annual Spring Concert this weekend.
The concert will feature “Requiem” by John Rutter, English madrigals, African-American spirituals and more. The show will feature guest harpist Beverly Wesner-Hoehn; chorus soloists Linda Carter, Chuck Maxon and Diane Epler; and a duet by Diane Wright and Janet Russell.

Taste of Calaveras
Join a celebration of the wine, food, art and culture at a Taste of Calaveras on Sunday.
Calaveras County artists will present an art show, and local entertainment and demonstrations will be held throughout the day.
