What’s this? ‘Nightmare’ and the symphony
The Modesto Symphony Orchestra brings a Halloween treat with an added trick to its October pops concert as the Disney animated classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas” plays on a big screen while the orchestra’s musicians perform the score live in accompaniment.

Harvest in Modesto
The Modesto Harvest Festival returns this weekend, a fall celebration in downtown featuring a pumpkin patch, crafts, art show, food, crafts, classic-car show and live music. Also this year, will be a Geek Fashion Show and a Miss Harvest Pageant, celebrating creativity, positivity, individuality and community involvement.

Wine, cheese and fun
The annual homage to the classic drink and food pairing returns with the Riverbank Cheese & Wine Exposition this weekend. The 41st annual festival promises multiple wine-tasting sessions each day, craft beer and cheese tastings, more than 100 arts and crafts vendors and live music and more.

Beer, brats and music
Steins will be raised en masse at the annual Modesto Oktoberfest. Held each year by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, the celebration will feature music and a midway along with plenty of brats, sauerkraut, German potato salad and, of course, beers all around. Plenty of microbrews will be available for sampling, as will California wines and some nonalcoholic drinks.

Table setting fundraiser
Preview 40 elaborately decorated tables at the annual McHenry Mansion Foundation Table Setting fundraiser. The uniquely themed table settings range from formal to fun at the annual event, which benefits the nonprofit McHenry Mansion. Preview day is Monday for the tables with light refreshments. On Tuesday, a luncheon will be offered. Reservations are required for the luncheon.

Honoring Hispanic Heritage
The State Theatre screens the film “Frida” in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The biopic of one of Mexico’s most prominent painters was produced by and stars Salma Hayek, who ages 30 years on screen as she charts the life of Frida Kahlo. The State is partnering with the Modesto Certified Farmers Market and the Dia de Los Muertos Modesto committee for the event, which also includes an altar, art show, folklorico dancers and more. Earlier in the day, people who attend the Modesto Certified Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to noon dressed as Kahlo can be part of a costume contest.
