‘Sister Act’
Catch the second performance of the nationally touring Broadway production “Sister Act” featuring Modesto native Emily Kay Shrader. The Enochs High graduate and YES Company alum returns to her hometown to perform for the first time since finishing college last May. She plays young postulant – or nun in training – Sister Mary Robert in the musical based on the Whoopi Goldberg comedy film.

Science on Screen
The Science on Screen program returns to downtown Modesto’s State Theatre with the film “Robot & Frank.” The series, aimed at students, couples talks and exhibits on science with popular feature films. A Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory research engineer will talk before the screening about computer simulation, robotics and 3-D printing. The film, starring Frank Langella, follows a retired jewel thief and his robot caregiver.

Central West Ballet
Central West Ballet culminates its two-year James Irvine Foundation Grant initiative with the “Let’s Dance! Part 2” program this weekend. The show is part of the professional dance company’s efforts to create interactive public performances and improve community outreach. The show will feature more than 50 dancers, including 25 from the company, students from 5678 Dance Studio and guest performers.

Youth concert
VMI Rocks returns for its largest youth concert yet. The Valley Music Institute will feature 24 student bands performing at their winter-term final concert. The rock ’n’ roll school works with musicians (from beginners to veterans) and places them in bands based on compatibility to rehearse, record, make videos and play shows. More than 120 students will play during the marathon show.

Hildegard Festival
The women-in-arts-focused Hildegard Festival continues in Turlock. The California State University, Stanislaus, event honors female contributions and achievements in music, visual arts, theater, poetry, animation, dance and literature with lectures, panels and performances. This is the third time the university has held the festival; the previous ones were in 1999 and 2003.

Bluegrass concert
Enjoy some world-class bluegrass at the Peer Recovery Art Project. Newgrass pioneer Eddie Adcock and his wife, Martha, will perform, along with local bluegrass quartet Red Dog Ash. Adcock was a member of the 1960s bluegrass act The Country Gentlemen and has been compared to fellow bluegrass greats Mac Wiseman and Bill Monroe.
