Clarinet master Dave Bennett returns to the Gallo Center for the Arts. The performer brings his “Tribute to the Benny Goodman” to Modesto. The show features the famous swing style Goodman was famous for as well as a program filled with his hits from “Moonglow,” “I’ve Got Rhythm,” “Sing Sing Sing,” “Let’s Dance” and “Don’t Be That Way.” Bennett last played the center with his quartet in 2014 for a Modesto Symphony Orchestra concert.

Educating Rita

Stage 3 Theatre Company opens its 2017 season with the comedy-drama “Educating Rita.” The show will be presented at the Dogwood Theatre at Columbia College while its downtown Sonora location continues a renovation project. The play explores the friendship between a hairdresser and aspiring student named Rita (played by Columbia College student Charlie Cites) and her professor tutor (Graham Green of Murphy’s Creek Theatre).

Ramón Ayala

King of the Accordian Ramón Ayala returns to the Gallo Center for the Arts. The Grammy-winning Mexican superstar is back with his band Sus Bravos del Norte. The popular performer’s career has spanned more than 50 years. The icon of norteño music has sold out several shows at the center. He has recorded more than 100 albums and landed hits with songs like “Un Rinconcito En El Cielo” and “Chaparra de Mi Amor.”

Sonora Comic Con

The organizers behind Turlock Comic Con bring their pop culture celebration to the foothills. The first-ever Sonora Comic Con unfurls Memorial Day. The event will include booths selling comics, collectible cards, toys, posters and other memorabilia. Cosplayers, comic artists, actors and more will be special guests for the event.

Calaveras Community Band

The Murphys Community Club kicks off its summer concert season at Murphys Community Park with its annual Memorial Day Concert. Director Mic Harper will conduct the Calaveras Community Band. The show will honor men and women who have served in the armed forces. The program will include military tributes, Sousa marches, standards and more. The Murphys Community Club hosts eight shows at the park from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The 191st Army Band

The 191st Army Band, known as the “Band of the Wild West,” will perform a special Memorial Day ceremony at Lakewood Memorial Park. Also performing will be the Golden Valley Chorus and the California State Honor Guard. The Memorial Day ceremony will honor those who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces. The 191st Army Band was first formed in 1943 and is now based out of Dublin.
