Guitarist kicks off Red Tie Arts winter concert series
Local music group Red Tie Arts is kicking off its winter series this weekend.
Helmed by longtime area promoter John Griswold, the group had a successful run over the summer with its Lucca Winery concert series in Ripon. It continues with intimate shows this winter at Barkin’ Dog Grill in downtown Modesto.
The first show will feature guitarist Jesse Christian Hendricks on Friday, Nov. 25. Hendricks has been a frequent pre-show entertainer at other Red Tie Arts events. He specializes in Spanish guitar and world music from Spain, South America and beyond.

Taylor Hicks
“American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks is coming to Black Oak Casino.
The Alabama native won the fifth season of the reality singing series thanks to his “Soul Patrol” fans. Since then he has released three blue-eyed soul albums including his self-titled debut in 2006, 2008’s “Early Works” and 2009’s “The Distance.”

Holidays with the Rat Pack
The Pack is back for a free holiday show at the State Theatre.
The Christmas-themed show is aimed at seniors and will feature local singer Matt Henderson returning as the Pack leader. Joining him will be fellow local entertainer and businessman David Halvorson.
The retro Vegas-style show will feature old favorites and comic repartee. New this year will be performances by the Downey High School Dance Line, the Stanislaus Military Institute and local favorite Krista Serpa.

MJC fall concerts
Modesto Junior College presents two fall concerts this week.
The MJC Community Orchestra presents “A Salute to Spain y Video Juegos!” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, and then the MJC Community Concert Band presents its fall concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30. Both events will be at the Performing Arts Center auditorium on the East Campus.
The The MJC Community Orchestra show will feature Spanish-flavored music with a guitar solo from MJC music professor David Chapman in it first half. The second half of the program will feature music from video games like “Halo,” “Civilization IV” and “Bounty Hunter.”
Tickets are $5 general admission, $1 for students of all ages and seniors. The MJC Concert Band show will include works by Alfred Reed, Franz Liszt, W. Francis McBeth and more. Admission is free.
