Carnegie Arts Center hosts Children’s Book Fair

Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center holds its first-ever Children’s Book Fair this weekend.

The event will complement the center’s ongoing fall exhibition, “Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Original Illustration from the Art Kandy Collection.” The fair will give young readers the chance to meet authors and illustrators and find new favorites. The fair is sponsored by the city of Turlock Community Events and Activities Fund.

The fair will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. Award-winning illustrator-author Joe Cepeda will give a free lecture at 3 p.m. Sunday. All events are free. For more information, call 209-632-5761 or visit www.carnegieartsturlock.org.

MJC art exhibit

The work of former Modesto Junior College student Alex Walker will be on display on campus through the month of November.

The exhibit, “Arches, Pillars, Patterns and Portals,” will feature painting, collages, drawings, prints and sculpture created by Walker over the past decade. A public artist’s reception with refreshments will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday. The exhibit will run through Dec. 1 at the MJC Art Gallery on East Campus.

Funstrummers anniversary concert

Modesto’s Funstrummers Ukulele Band welcomes the public to come to its ninth annual anniversary concert Friday.

The community ukelele group plays public and private events throughout the year. Its anniversary show is themed “Sing The Songs of the Rainbow.” Show starts at 7 p.m. at the Trinity United Presbyterian in Modesto. Admission is free. Handel’s ‘Messiah’ in Ripon

The Ripon Oratorio Society is preparing for its 71st presentation of Handel’s “Messiah” in December.

The first of four rehearsals scheduled for each Sunday in November begins Nov. 6. Each rehearsal will be at 3 p.m. at the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Ripon. Bob De Ruiter will direct. The performance will be Dec. 4. All singers are welcome and asked to contribute a membership fee of $10.

‘Bells of Blessing’

The Salvation Army holds its annual “Bells of Blessing” benefit concert Sunday.

The event will feature the Opus Handbell Ensemble performing a fundraising show for the sixth year. Bell choirs from Modesto, Manteca and Turlock churches will play under the direction of Rich Colla. Concert starts at 4 p.m. at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church in the Telle Center. A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the Salvation Army.
