Guitar master, student musicians poised to entertain
Sunday Afternoons at CBS welcomes guitar master Clive Carroll this weekend.
The English-born musician makes a return stop in Modesto after performing with Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel last year. His solo performance will be part of the concert series’ ongoing 25th anniversary season 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Carroll is known for his technical skills and ability to play everything from jazz to Irish reels and even 16th- and 17th-century traditional music. He has played across North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East. He has also composed music for film, most recently the Julie Walters and Rupert Grint vehicle “Driving Lessons.” Tickets are $25 general, $20 students/seniors, $10 children. MJC Orchestra Day
Modesto Junior College hosts its annual High School Orchestra Day on Thursday, Nov. 3.
Nine Stanislaus County high schools will perform in a free, public concert running from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on the MJC East Campus. Participating schools are Davis, Downey, Enochs, Gregori, Johansen, Modesto, Patterson, Pitman and Turlock.
MJC Community Orchestra conductor and string professor Anne Martin will host the event. The student orchestras will perform a variety of orchestral works from composers including Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach and Kosaku Yamada. St. James Concert Series
The St. James Concert Series in Sonora opens its new season with tenor Ric Campero this weekend.
Campero serves as choir director for Central United Methodist Church and the Stockton Singers. He is a music teacher with Ceres Unified School District. He will be accompanied by Mary Monroe on piano. The program will include music from “West Side Story,” “La Bohème” and more.
The concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Red Church. Tickets are $15 general, $6 students under 19. Season tickets are $45. For more information, call 209-536-0825.
Carnegie Arts Center Family Friday
Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center gets spooky this weekend for its Family Friday series.
The free family series invites the public to an evening of ghost stories at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. Professional storyteller Megumi will spin Halloween-themed stories. Zombie Zydeco Dance Party
Have a Creole Halloween with the Zombie Zydeco Dance Party this weekend.
Performing will be long-running local favorites the Bluesbox Bayou Band. The show will also be a CD release party for the group’s new album, “Ghosts of the Bayou.” Festivities will also include a costume contest. The Portal
One of Modesto’s newest music spaces, the Portal, has announced its fall lineup.
The Uncle Lonny Presents venue first opened last fall. Three shows are planned between now and the end of the year. They start with a Voodoo Rockabilly show at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. Performing will be Year Zero, Before 20 and Midnight Sons. Admission is $7 general, $5 with a costume.
The other shows will be Nov. 18 with Mr. Skinny and Dynamo and Bongo and the Point and Dec. 16 with Jeremy Norris and Dangerous Mood, Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame and Slingshot.
