In brief: Music at the GMC series continues Saturday

Enjoy an eclectic evening of sounds at the Music at the GMC series Saturday, Oct. 8.

The ongoing acoustic concert series sponsored by Modesto Unplugged and ModestoView at Gottschalk Music Center in Modesto will feature cowboy poet Kerry Grombacher and Jewish folk-rock songwriter Leah Shoshanah. Grombacher writes contemporary western songs set across the United States. Shoshanah writes original music inspired by rock, folk, samba and jazz.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 general; kids 12 and younger are free. Seating is limited. To reserve seats, call 209-543-5306 and for more information, visit www.modestounplugged.com.

MJC Don Hall exhibit

Check out the exhibition “Don Hall: Masterpiece Theater” at the Modesto Junior College Art Gallery.

The show features the work of local artist Hall, who is known for his often whimsical self-portraits where he inserts himself into the works and imitates the style of famous masters. A public artist’s reception will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the gallery.

The exhibit opened this month and runs through Oct. 27. Hall has served as an adjunct art instructor at Modesto Junior College, Merced College and San Joaquin Delta College. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursdays. Admission is free. For more information, call 209-575-6819 or visit www.mjc.edu.

Art Space on Main show

Check out the artwork of California State University, Stanislaus, art professor Martin Azevedo all this month.

The artist’s show “If Destruction Be Our Lot” is on display at Art Space on Main in downtown Turlock. The exhibit includes photography, video, sculpture and printmaking that explores the concepts of power, masculinity and mortality. The works will be on display through Oct. 27.

TONI&GUY Hair Show

High fashion meets high hair at the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy Hair Show at the Vintage Faire Mall on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The free show is being hosted by the Manteca and Modesto campuses of TONI&GUY. Enjoy two shows featuring more than 80 models who will show off the latest trends in fashion and hair design on the runway. The event will also feature a full-scale salon, selfie booth, VIP lounge and product giveaways.

Last year more than 2,000 people attended the free event. Shows will be at 3 and 5 p.m. at center court.
