Spirit Airlines is stopping service to 4 CA cities. When will flights end?

Spirit Airlines is ending flight service to a dozen destinations across the United States — including four major California cities — after declaring bankruptcy for the second time.

That includes Sacramento International Airport, as well as destinations in the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego.

Flights to Sacramento aboard the budget airline will end later this fall, Spirit Airlines told The Sacramento Bee.

“We are grateful to the airports, business partners and community members in these markets who welcomed and supported us,” airline representives wrote in a Friday, Aug. 5, email to The Bee.

“We remain committed to offering high-value travel options and will continue to serve dozens of destinations throughout the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean,” Spirit Airlines said.

Why did Spirit Airlines declare bankruptcy?

Headquartered in Florida, Spirit Airlines flies to more than 90 destinations across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, the company said on its website.

The ultra low-cost carrier filed for Chapter bankruptcy in November 2024 due to mounting debts and rising operation costs.

Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection again in August, the company said in an Aug. 29 news release.

“Since emerging from our previous restructuring, which was targeted exclusively on reducing Spirit’s funded debt and raising equity capital, it has become clear that there is much more work to be done and many more tools are available to best position Spirit for the future,” Dave Davis, Spirit Airlines president and CEO, said in the release.
