Modesto City Schools bond measure hanging on in Stanislaus County election results update
Measure L, Modesto City Schools’ $198 million bond bid to make facilities improvements at its high schools, is staying alive, according to updated unofficial results released Tuesday evening by the Stanislaus County election office.
The measure has 27,411 votes, or 55.5%, in support, vs. 21,966 votes, or 44.5%, against it. It needs 55% voter approval to pass.
Modesto City Schools has one other close race: trustee Charlene West vs. challenger Jolene Daly to represent parts of east Modesto, including Empire and the airport neighborhood.
The latest update has West leading with 50.5% of the vote to Daly’s 49.5%. The incumbent has a lead of 70 votes out of the 6,712 that have been counted.
West’s lead is down from the last update, which was Thursday, Nov. 10. At that time, she had 51.1% of the vote to Daly’s 48.9%.
The Turlock Unified School District also has a couple of tight board races.
In Tuesday’s update, Area 4 incumbent Mary Jackson had 1,790 votes, or 50.2%, to challenger Jeff Nichols’ 1,774 votes, or 49.8%.
And the district’s Area 6 incumbent, Jeffrey Cortinas, had 840 votes, or 50.4% to Rupinder Singh Jagpal’s 827 votes, or 49.6%.
The election office reported it has now counted 98,719 ballots in races held countywide and had 30,500 vote-by-mail ballots that remained to be processed and counted. That includes checking signatures. The office also has a little more than 1,300 other ballots to process.
Stanislaus County had 282,393 registered voters as of the Nov. 8 election, and voter turnout countywide is now 35%, based on Tuesday evening’s update.
Adding the ballots the election office has counted so far with the remaining uncounted ballots would put turnout at about 46% countywide. The office will continue to process and count ballots it received in the mail no later than Nov. 15 as long as they have a postmark of Nov. 8 or earlier.
The election office will release updates Tuesdays and Thursdays and has 30 days after the election — or Dec. 8 — to complete its count.
The unofficial updated tally results have been posted on the election website, www.stanvote.com.
