VOL: Central Catholic, Manteca roll to easy victories

The beatings go on for the Central Catholic High School football team.

Opening the Valley Oak League season at home on Friday night, the Raiders rolled to a 59-14 victory over Weston Ranch.

It was the ninth straight victory for the private school from Modesto, which last lost in November 2014 to Oakdale.

Since then, the Raiders (4-0, 1-0 VOL) rolled to a CIF State Division IV title and opened this season with four straight victories.

The usual suspects carried the load for Central Catholic on Friday – Jared Rice had 109 yards and two rushing touchdowns and another on a kickoff return; Montell Bland totaled 144 yards rushing and receiving, adding two TDs; quarterback Hunter Petlansky completed 7 of 13 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a TD; and outside of a Weston Ranch 85-yard rushing play, the defense limited the Cougars (3-1, 0-1) to fewer than 100 yards of offense.

As usual, the Raiders got off to a fast start. Rice returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, and minutes later, Petlansky ran for a 75-yard TD run.

Petlansky had an 8-yard TD run and Montell Bland added a 1-yard run and an 80-yard scoring reception from Petlansky for a 35-0 first-quarter lead.

Up next for Central Catholic is a trip to Lathrop (3-1, 1-0), which thumped upstart East Union 35-0 on Friday. After that, it’s a game at home against Kimball (1-3, 0-1) before the Raiders’ first big VOL test – an Oct. 16 game at Manteca (2-2, 1-0).

MANTECA 62, KIMBALL 0, at Manteca – Dakarai Charles set the tone early for the Buffaloes, taking the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown as the Buffalos (2-2, 1-0) hammered the Jaguars (1-3, 0-1).

Charles finished with 129 yards rushing and two TDs and Kameron Beaman added 98 yards and two TDs as Manteca led 48-0 at the half.

A running clock was used in the second half.

Charles’ touchdown runs covered 42 and 56 yards.

Manteca has outscored its opponents 193-12 and next face Weston Ranch and Sierra – a 54-14 loser to Oakdale on Friday – before playing host to Central Catholic in what should be the Buffaloes’ first big test of the season.
