Local Digest: MJC basketball, baseball teams come up short

The Modesto Junior College and Sacramento City men’s basketball teams are both bringing up the rear in the Big 8 Conference.

But it certainly didn't look that way on Tuesday night – especially in the first half.

Sacramento appeared to be the far more polished of the two as the Cougars (2-7 Big 8, 8-14 overall) rolled past the Pirates 81-61.

It was the fifth straight loss for MJC (2-7, 5-16), which early last month handed Sacramento at 66-61 defeat at MJC Gym.

On Tuesday, it was a different story for an MJC team that's one just once since that Jan. 9 victory over the Cougars.

Brandon Rowden had 24 points to lead Sacramento, which ran out to a 43-19 halftime lead.

MJC women’s basketball – Like the men’s team, the women could not make it two in a row against Sacramento City College, losing 51-37. The Pirates beat the Cougars last month 45-42 at MJC Gym.

Brianna McGinness and Kaitlin Gundlach each had eight points for the Pirates (2-7 Big 8, 3-17).

MJC baseball – The Pirates (0-3) took an 8-1 lead into the sixth inning at Monterey Peninsula College, but left tied at 8 and gave up two more runs in the seventh en route to a 10-8 defeat.

Jacob Cooper went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including a double and a triple for MJC. Modesto starter Brent Montgomery pitched strong the first five inings before falling into trouble in the sixth, allowing five runs before being replaced.

MJC women's tennis – The Pirates won 15 of 16 sets to roll past Chabot College 9-0. No. 1 singles player Vanessa Teves and No. 2 Chiara Adamo both won their singles matches in straight sets and combined to win the No. 1 doubles match. No. 3 Parker Pilati lost one game in victory and No. 4 Britney Leon swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

MJC men's tennis – No. 1 singles player Jose Gonzalez and No. 2 Corey Purser had straight sets victories in singles and combined to win at No. 1 doubles, but the Pirates fell short to Chabot College 5-4.
