Cal State Stanislaus men, women fall short; Columbia rolls

An impressive unbeaten road conference start came to an end on Saturday night for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team.

Terrance Drisdom (22 points) hit two free throws with one second left to help Cal Poly Pomona secure a wild 60-57 victory over the Warriors in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Kellogg Gym.

The Warriors, looking for their fifth straight road conference victory, erased a 51-43 deficit with eight minutes left with a 13-0 run.

Stanislaus’ Shay Mataele scored on a layup with 3 minutes, 1 second left in the game to give the Warriors a 56-51 lead.

But Jordan Faison (15 points) scored on three straight layups during a 40-second stretch with under two minutes left to put the Broncos up 58-56.

Mataele hit a free throw with 48 seconds left to put the Warriors to within one.

After a Pomona 3-point miss, Clinton Tremelling put a 3-pointer, but missed and Drisdom got the rebound, was immediately fouled and hit the free throws with a second left.

Rob Walters and Wes Bartole each had 12 points to lead Stanislaus, which trailed 27-24 at halftime.

The Warriors (7-4, 4-2) fell out of a three-way tie for first in advance of the start of a four-game homestand next Friday against San Bernardino at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Pomona improved to 8-3, 4-2.

Cal Poly Pomona 86, Cal State Stanislaus 59 – Camille Roberts matched her career-high with five 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Roberts, from Turlock, finished with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to offset the 26-point effort by Ariel Marsh as the Broncos improved to 7-3, 5-1.

Roberts hit a 3-pointer with 58 seconds left to get the Warriors to within 32-25 at halftime. Stanislaus cut the lead to four before a 9-0 run, and later a 10-1 run, helped the Broncos put the game out of reach.

Columbia 93, Gavilan 63 – Rafe King hit eight 3-pointers en route to a 31-point effort as the host Claim Jumpers (9-6) routed the Rams (1-12).

King, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard from Carson City, helped guide Columbia to a 44-30 halftime lead in his team’s final tuneup before the start of Central Valley Conference play on Tuesday at College of Sequoias.

Marquell Hubbard, a 6-2 freshman guard from Palm Beach, Fla., added 21 points.

Ian Merzwinski added nine points and Alex Kiriluk, previously of Modesto Junior College and Rosendo AmayaWood added eight for Columbia.

Calaveras High graduate Wyatt Madrid had nine points for Gavilan.
