Diablo Valley rallies in ninth to beat MJC

Diablo Valley College scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Modesto JC baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Viking Field in Pleasant Hill.

The Pirates (6-9-1, 0-2 Big Eight Conference) had taken the lead in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Jacob Cooper and William Reeder, but the Vikings (5-12, 2-0) tied the game in the bottom half on an RBI single by Jake Villa, then won it when Michael Brdar’s sacrifice fly to left plated Richard Lindsey, who reached on an error to open the inning.

Cooper went 2 for 5 with a double and scored three runs, and Reeder went 2 for 5 with two runs batted in for the Pirates, who were outhit 11-8.

MJC starter Eddie Machado allowed three earned runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking two in 62/3 innings. Reliever Xavier Macias (2-2) allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits in two innings and was saddled with the loss.

Clayton Nodal (1-1) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win for Diablo Valley, which overcame four errors.

The Pirates and Vikings will meet again on Saturday afternoon in Modesto.

Golf

The MJC men shot a team score of 430 to finish in fifth place at Thursday’s Big 8 Conference tournament No. 6 at Whitney Oaks Golf Course in Rocklin. Riley Pizl and Tim Baker (Manteca) each shot 81 to lead MJC. Spencer Morse shot 88 and Christian Mullins 89 for the Pirates.
