Local Digest: Chuck Hayes is Kentucky Hall of Fame inductee
Former Modesto Christian High School star and 11-year NBA veteran Chuck Hayes never will be forgotten at the University of Kentucky.
Hayes, a defensive force and tenacious rebounder for the Wildcats from 2002 to ’05, will be inducted to the UK Athletics Hall of Fame. He’ll join former football coach Rich Brooks and others who will be honored during Hall of Fame Weekend on Sept. 23-24 in conjunction with the Wildcats’ home football game against South Carolina.
Hayes, the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2005, ranks seventh in career rebounds (910) and eighth in career steals (170) at Kentucky and is a member of UK’s 1,000-point club. He led the Wildcats in rebounding for three straight seasons and played in the NCAA Tournament all four years. His teams, coached by Tubby Smith, reached the Elite Eight in 2003 and ’05.
Sanchez reaches doubles semifinals – Former Grace Davis and USC tennis star Maria Sanchez and doubles partner Johanna Konta of Great Britain enjoyed a busy and successful week at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford.
Sanchez and Konta won two matches, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Yifan Xu and Saisai Zheng in the quarterfinals. The pair dropped their semifinal match to Darija Jurak of Croatia and Russia-born Australian Anastasia Rodionova 6-4, 6-2.
Konta went on to win her first WTA singles title by beating Venus Williams 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.
MJC Kickoff Dinner – Tickets are on sale for the second Modesto Junior College Football Kickoff Dinner, to be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at the MJC West Campus Ag Center. Preseason practice officially begins Aug. 11, and the Pirates will travel to Merced College for a scrimmage Aug. 25. Modesto Junior College will open at home Sept. 3 against College of San Mateo.
