Susan Azevedo: What a waste to pay for bike racers’ rooms
Re “Amgen Tour cyclists to spend night in Modesto” (Page A3, Feb. 4): Unbelievable. The Modesto City Council has just handed $75,000 in hard-earned taxpayer dollars to Amgen, a corporate entity, in exchange for which their bicycle racers are transported from Monterey to Modesto, fed and housed. They arrive, they eat, they sleep and they leave for Lodi. At our expense.
What, exactly, do we get for this? It is argued that, perhaps, some of the money can be raised from the community. Are you kidding? Not likely. Four votes from the city council to approve this. Irresponsible.
Since the city of Modesto has $75,000 to throw around, how about supporting our fire and police departments? Thank you to the councilmembers who voted no: Councilmembers Mani Grewal, Bill Zoslocki and Kristi Ah You.
