What is NIE?
Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort with local schools to utilize newspapers as a learning tool in
the classroom. NIE reinforces a positive and relevant lifetime reading habit in students by engaging them with
an authentic text - the newspaper.
NIE provides newspapers and teaching materials to classrooms right here in our own community! There are NIE
programs for all grade levels - from kindergarten through high school - as well as ESL and adult learners.
Newspapers are provided at little or no cost to schools and learning facilities, through generous
donations made by community members, businesses and Modesto Bee subscribers.

Who can participate?
Newspapers can be requested by any person who is involved with the education os learners in our community,
in either public or private settings. Principals, teachers, instructors and education directors may
request newspapers for their schools, classrooms, and after-school activity programs where students can
use the newspaper to enhance their learning experience.

How do newpapers get to the classroom?
The Bee delivers newspapers to teachers at local schools and other learning facilities each
morning. Newspaper deliveries are available in quantities as small as 10 and as large as needed. NIE works
to meet the volume of newspapers requested based on the need of the educators we serve.
