From the archives: Modesto woman dies in drive-by shooting
Here is the initial story on the shooting death of Lacy Ferguson.
It published Monday, Aug. 25, 2003. It was written by The Bee’s Patrick Giblin.
Three people were shot in front of a Quick Stop Market in Modesto early Sunday morning and one of them later died, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department reported.
Lacy Ferguson, 25, of Modesto, was still on life support after being declared brain dead at an undisclosed area hospital Sunday, said Tom Letras, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
“We understand that she's an organ donor and preparations are being made to transplant her organs,” Letras said.
A 21-year-old man from Pacoima, in Southern California, was wounded twice in the torso and is in a local hospital. A 39-year-old man from Modesto was shot in the arm -- his condition wasn't known late Sunday.
Neither of their identities were released by the Sheriff's Department.
All of the victims were standing with a group of people in front of the store at 1501 Paradise Road.
Sheriff's reports say two men in a newer model black or dark-colored Camry or Ford Focus drove slowly through the Quick Stop parking lot several times.
“Witnesses said they returned about two or three minutes later and opened fire with a handgun,” Letras said.
The shooting was reported at about 1:20 a.m. The car was last seen heading north on Victoria Road
