Update: Man shot to death at Ustach Park in northeast Modesto

A 21-year-old man was shot to death near Ustach Park in northeast Modesto on Tuesday night.

At about 8:40 p.m., Modesto police were called to Hillglen Avenue just west of Bear Cub Lane on a report that a male had been shot in the back.

When officers arrived, they found the man down and unconscious in the street with witnesses performing CPR on the victim. Emergency crews and law enforcement officers took over the life-saving measures before the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, according to Sgt. Chris Adams of the Modesto Police Department.

At this time, there is nobody in custody and no immediate identifiable suspects, Adams said.

The department's crime scene truck arrived at about 10:30 p.m., and would be there throughout the night, Adams said. He said witnesses were still on scene, and would be interviewed.

A few people who lived nearby said they didn't hear anything until the sirens began flooding the area.

Adams said there was no information on what led up to the shooting. There were early reports that it took place at the basketball courts on the north end of the park. However, Adams said when officers arrived, the victim was in the street.

Red and yellow crime scene tape had cordoned off most of the the park, which serves residents west of Roselle Avenue and north of Floyd Avenue. It sits next to Ustach Middle School.

Hillglen was shut down at Bear Cub Lane at the northeast corner of the park.

This is the third homicide being investigated by Modesto police since Oct. 28.
