Woman burned rescuing pets, dogs killed in two separate Stanislaus County fires
Two separate overnight fires in Stanislaus County left a woman seriously burned and multiple pets dead, according to fire officials.
Crews responded around 11:30 p.m. to a working structure fire at a mobile home park in the 900 block of G Street in Oakdale. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the corner of a double-wide mobile home.
The occupant escaped but suffered first- and second-degree burns to her face, hair and back after attempting to re-enter the home to rescue her pets. She was flown to a burn unit for treatment, authorities said.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze in about 15 minutes. No firefighters were injured. Crews located four dogs inside the home and brought them out, but the animals did not survive.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Stanislaus Fire Investigation Unit.
Earlier in the night, crews responded to an RV fire near Olivero Road and Crows Landing Road in south Modesto.
Firefighters arrived to find a fully engulfed recreational vehicle with downed power lines sparking near nearby homes, according to officials. Additional resources were requested, and Turlock Irrigation District crews responded to secure power to the area before firefighters were able to fully extinguish the flames.
One dog was found dead inside the RV. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of that fire also remains under investigation by the fire investigation unit.
Officials remind residents not to re-enter burning structures, even in an attempt to save pets, due to the rapid spread of smoke and heat.
