Fire at Salida auto dismantling yard creates visual hazard, slows traffic on Hwy 99
Smoke from a fire at J&D Auto Dismantling Yard in Salida slowed traffic on Hwy 99 on Friday afternoon.
The Modesto Fire Department dispatched firetrucks to a residential structure fire around 2 p.m., Deputy Chief Darin Jesberg said. The person who reported the fire was likely in a nearby residence, so the emergency dispatcher marked it as such.
Typically five engines respond to residential structure fires, Jesberg said. Eight fire engines, one truck and two battalion chiefs in total were sent to the scene.
About an hour later the fire was “under control”, Jesberg wrote in a message to The Bee.
The smoke from the fire created a visual hazard for drivers on Hwy 99 near the incident and slowed traffic down, California Highway Patrol Officer Thomas Olsen said.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation. The incident will require an extensive clean up.
