Sheriff’s Department investigating body found in Delta-Mendota canal west of Newman

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a man who was found floating in the Delta-Mendota Canal west of Newman on Wednesday morning.

A canal worker first spotted the the man’s body in the area of Bell and Stuhr roads at about 11:15 a.m.

Newman firefighters located him more than a mile south of there, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Sgt. Darwin Hatfield.

He did not release the man’s name but said he was in his 60s.

Hatfield said it appears the man went in the canal some time Wednesday and that his death is not considered suspicious at this time.
