Family and friends held a candlelight vigil Sunday for Jason Moland, who was shot and killed by an off-duty Ceres police officer.

The gathering took place at Beyer Park in Modesto, where the shooting happened on the evening of March 29.

Investigators say Moland pointed what later was determined to be a BB gun at Officer Thomas Miller, who was in the park with Moland’s wife.

Miller was released from employment three weeks later, having failed to pass the one-year probation period required of officers at the Ceres Police Department.

A criminal investigation by the Modesto Police Department and independent review by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office have not been completed.
