Alphonse Mucha exhibit

Come see the last full week of the “Alphonse Mucha: The Golden Age of Art Nouveau” exhibit at downtown Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center. Considered the pioneer of the art nouveau movement, the Czech artist rose to prominence in Paris in the late 1880s. He is known for his paintings, illustrations, advertisements, posters and designs throughout the early 20th century.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays and until 8 p.m. Fridays (through Jan. 10)

Hands on Wednesdays

Monthly series Hands on Wednesdays from the Great Valley Museum kicks off the new year with its first session. The topic will be hibernation, and attendees are invited to come in pajamas or comfortable clothing to talk about how some animals sleep away the winter. The science-related classes are suitable for children ages 5 to 12.

Home Depot car show

Home Depot hosts a free Winter Car Show for the public. The event will include free hot dogs and kids workshops. Throughout the day there will be visits by popular costumed characters including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Batman, Barbie, Captain America, Snow White, Minions and many more.

Storytelling quilts

The First Saturday Stories and Art series at the Mistlin Gallery continues. This month’s will cover storytelling quilts and the book “Tar Beach” by Faith Ringgold. Participants will make quilt squares and patterns that tell a story. The monthly series combines a story book with a related art project. All ages are welcome, but children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.

Art Space on Main

See the work of California State University, Stanislaus, students exhibited at downtown Turlock’s Art Space on Main. Works in the Stanislaus State Juried Student Exhibition will be displayed at the gallery through Jan. 16. The mixed media exhibit includes paintings, sculpture, drawing, film and more from art students.

Black Oak Casino

Ring in the new year with two party bands playing this weekend at the Black Oak Casino’s Willow Creek Lounge. Reno-based party band Audioboxx rocks out Friday, Jan. 1, and The Spazmatics come to nerd it up Saturday, Jan. 2. Audioboxx plays a mix of rock and classic rock, and The Spazmatics, billed as “nerds who rock,” play ’80s new wave.
