Nuts blank San Jose, snap 7-game losing streak

The Modesto Nuts’ not only had lost seven consecutive games, but they also had not led during that drought.

Lefty Jack Wynkoop and a resurgent offense brought the frustration to an end.

Wynkoop, in his third start since his promotion from Low-A Asheville, blanked the San Jose Giants for seven innings during Modesto’s long-sought 6-0 win Thursday night at Municipal Stadium.

Wynkoop (1-1), a former star at South Carolina, struck out five, walked none and scattered seven hits. Relievers Tyler Matzek and Luis Niebla completed the shutout. Niebla induced a game-ending double play, as Modesto salvaged the finale of a four-game series.

The Nuts, who totaled only three runs in their previous four games, had nine hits and touched San Jose starter Jason Forjet (8-6) for four earned runs.

Back-to-back doubles by Drew Weeks and Josh Fuentes put Modesto in front in the second, and Wes Rogers’ double an inning later brought in Omar Carrizales and Forrest Wall. Carrizales’ triple and Wall’s sacrifice fly extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth.

Modesto continued to pull away in the eighth on Dom Nunez’ RBI single and Fuentes’ sacrifice fly.

The Nuts, now 5-10 in the second half and in last place in the Cal League’s North Division, return to Thurman Field on Friday night to begin a four-game set against Lake Elsinore (7-8), tied for last in the South’s second-half standings.
