MJC’s Yaritza Arista heading to San Jose State

Modesto Junior College soccer star Yaritza Arista will continue her career at San Jose State.

Arista, a sophomore from Livingston, led MJC to a berth in the State Final Four. The midfielder had 21 goals and 18 assists, as the Pirates were ranked 10th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America at season’s end.

Arista was selected as an All-Northern California Regional midfielder. The Pirates were 38-7-4 when she was on the field the past two years.

Basketball

Big weekend for Warriors – Cal State Stanislaus’ men’s and women’s teams will accent Homecoming and Alumni Week with games at Fitzpatrick Arena. The Warriors welcome Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night and Cal State East Bay on Saturday night. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30.

The Stanislaus women (13-5, 9-3) are fourth in the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the men (5-12, 4-8) are ninth.

Baseball

Tough 11th for MJC – The Pirates allowed four runs in the 11th inning and dropped a nonleague game at home to Mission 5-1 on Thursday.

A two-run homer by Tyler Barry and a two-run single by Adam Rios did the damage for Mission (1-0). Both teams scored in the 10th – the Pirates drew even when Derek Perez scored an unearned run on a wild pitch – to extend the game.

Modesto (2-2) managed only three hits by Austin Garcia, William Reeder and Colt Parshall. Starter Tyler Arnsberg struck out four in 4 2/3 shutout innings.

Golf

MJC defeats Delta – Freshman Nick Sharp posted a 4-over-par 75 at Ripon’s Spring Creek Country Club as MJC defeated Delta for the second time this week, 397-412. Robert Erler had a 76 for Modesto.
