Pirate Weekly: Wrestling to compete at NorCals, basketball teams to host tourneys
The Modesto Junior College men’s wrestling team is competing in the CCCAA NorCal Championships on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Delta College.
MJC is currently No. 9 in the state.
Sophomore William Schwertscharf (Buhach Colony HS) is ranked No. 3 in the state.
Football: Despite a loss to the College of San Mateo in the NorCal Championship last Saturday, MJC finished one of its best two-year stretches in school history.
The Pirates were 17-6, marking only the third time since 1921 the school had at least 17 wins in a two-year span.
Women’s Basketball: The Pirates host the third annual MJC Women’s Basketball Tournament this week. MJC is 7-0 and the tournament begins Thursday and lasts until Sunday.
The other five teams are: Hartnell College, Los Medanos College, Victor Valley College, Napa Valley College and Lassen College.
Freshman Annie Winton (Livingston HS) leads the Pirates with 18.7 points per game and freshman center Melissa Brady (Enochs HS) is second with 18.6 ppg. Brady leads the team with 11.8 rebounds per game.
Men’s Basketball: The Pirates host the 82nd annual MJC men’s basketball tournament next week.
The tournament begins Dec. 12 and ends on Dec. 14.
The tournament is one of the oldest college tournaments in the U.S. dating back to its status as the first state basketball tournament back in December of 1938 at MJC. One of the All-Tourney award recipients in that inaugural game was Jackie Robinson, who played for Pasadena City College.
This year’s participants include College of Sequoias, Fresno City College , College of Marin, Lassen College, Mendocino College , Ohlone College, and Simpson University JV.
