Red Sox Make Roman Anthony Decision Before Rays Game

The Boston Red Sox are sending left fielder Roman Anthony to the injured list after dealing with a right-hand injury. The team plan on calling up catcher Mickey Gasper as a roster replacement while Anthony spends some time recovering.

During the Red Sox's 5-4 road win victory against the Detroit Tigers on May 4, Anthony suffered the injury on his right wrist while fouling off a pitch. He was pulled from the game and was checked out.

Although initial X-ray examinations did not show anything serious at first, a later confirmed the extend of Athony's injury. It was confirmed to be a strain to a ligament just his right ring finger.

While speaking with Rob Bradford of the Baseball Isn't Boring Podcast, Anthony expresses that although he's never had to deal with a hand injury before, he is glad the injury isn't as serious as he thought it might be. "I think just getting the news back, understanding that it's nothing very serious is the best news that we could have gotten," Anthony said. (h/t Rob Bradford of Baseball Isn't Boring Podcast)

The Red Sox initially kept Anthony off of the injured list, doubting the seriousness of his hand injury. After a few medical exams were made, the team ultimately decided to keep him off the roster momentarily to recover from the injury.

Anthony is currently on his second MLB season of his career, having made his debut for the Red Sox during the 2025 MLB season. In his first season with Boston, Anthony played 71 games and recorded a .292 batting average.

Anthony's impressive MLB debut season would not go unnoticed, as he was named a finalist for the AL Rookie of the Year Award, finishing third in voting. Anthony was also named to the MLB's 2025 All-Rookie team as an outfielder.

Before being placed on the injured list, Anthony played 30 games for the Red Sox this season. He has recorded a .229 batting average, including one home run and 5 RBIs.

Anthony's injury is yet another blow to the Red Sox's season, as the team would wish to be anywhere than where they currently stand. The Red Sox are currently in last place in the AL East, positioned nearly 10 games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.

The Red Sox made the playoffs last season after missing out on October baseball for three straight seasons, losing out in the AL Wild Card Series to the Yankees. The team expects Anthony to recover quickly and return to the field as they will attempt to make a push to the playoffs for a second straight season.
