Roman Anthony Reacts to Red Sox' Decision to Fire Manager Alex Cora

After eight seasons at the manager, the Boston Red Sox made the decision to fire Alex Cora on Saturday following their dominant win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Yet, despite that victory, they improved to just 10-17 on the season and continue sit in last place in the AL East and have the second to worst record in the American League.

“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude,” Red Sox owner John Henry said in a statement Saturday. “He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.”

Five other coaches on Cora's staff were also let go, including Red Sox legend and game-planning coach Jason Varitek.

Now, Chad Tracy, who managed Boston's Triple-A affiliate in Worcester, will take over as interim manager. Before Sunday's game, Roman Anthony - who was coached by Tracy in recent years before his call-up - reacted to the news.

"I think when you're familiar with somebody during a time like this, and someone like [Tracy] steps in, he's tremendous at what he does… and you know he's going to have our best interest. Again, shocking. Didn't expect it. But you just adapt and overcome, and [Tracy] is going to be great,” Anthony said.

"As players, you kind of huddle up and understand that we're still held to the same standard by the fans and by the people around us. And I think regardless of who's here and who's not, when we take the field we hold ourselves to that same standard. Obviously this is weird, but it's going to be alright."

The Red Sox were swept by the Yankees heading into the weekend and have split their series with the Baltimore Orioles entering Sunday's contest. Anthony is also set to return after missing the last three games with a tweaked back.
