Yankees Rookie Cam Schlittler Receives Shocking Death Threats
New York Yankees rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler says he and his family have received death threats ahead of one of the biggest starts of his career.
Schlittler, 24, is set to make his Fenway Park debut against the rival Boston Red Sox, but the buildup has reportedly included harassment from hostile fans online.
The pitcher, who grew up in Walpole, Massachusetts and was once a Red Sox fan himself, said the trolling has become a regular occurrence. "Most normal fans could care less, right?" Schlittler said to the New York Post on Sunday, April 19. "It’s just those diehards that just have nothing else in their lives other than baseball or sports that really care about this, and the fact that I play for the Yankees makes it worse for them."
Despite the threats, Schlittler said he has not felt the need to involve the police. He also appears ready for the atmosphere waiting for him in Boston.
"It’s gonna be bad, it’s gonna be bad. I’m not nervous about it, but it’s gonna be loud," he said to the outlet. "They’re gonna probably have dudes that are my age or a little bit younger, sitting right outside the bullpen, yelling whatever, probably throwing stuff at me, trying to grab me."
The tension between Schlittler and Red Sox fans is not entirely new. Last postseason, the rookie delivered eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts in Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series, helping eliminate Boston.
And after that performance, he admitted the win led to fans allegedly targeting him and his family. "There’s a line and I think they crossed it a little bit," Schlittler said at the time. "I’m a competitor, and I’m gonna go out there and make sure I shut them down."
