Boys basketball: Enochs shocks defending MMC champ Davis
The Davis High boys basketball team is the defending Modesto Metro Conference champ. New school Enochs won't have seniors on campus until next year.
But Friday night, the Eagles stunned the Spartans. Enochs outscored Davis 29-6 in the fourth quarter, turning a tight game into a 67-53 Eagles victory at Davis High.
Tyler Wasden scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead Enochs (4-12, 1-3). Jose Blanco scored 15 to lead Davis (10-6, 2-3). Kolton Pico and Marcus Bell each scored 11 for Enochs.
Davis had a 27-24 halftime lead, and the teams traded baskets through the third quarter. But in the fourth, Davis struggled in most facets of the game while the Eagles pulled away.
JOHANSEN 64, BEYER 62, at Johansen -- The Vikings (2-2 MMC) went on a 14-0 run in the last three minutes to edge the Patriots (2-3).
After Beyer missed a shot, Johansen rebounded and called time out with 7 seconds left. Then Malachi Batt of the Vikings made a layup at the buzzer to win it.
Jesse Singer scored 14 points for Johansen, one of five Vikings in double figures.
Beyer's Bryan Garbez dominated inside and had 22 points. When Garbez fouled out with three minutes left in the game, Johansen went on its run.
Central California Conference boys
PITMAN 68, LOS BANOS 49, at Pitman -- The Pride's Austin Keaton (30 points) and the Tigers' Nick Etcheverry (27 points) hooked up for a shooters' duel in this CCC victory for Pitman. Etcheverry had eight 3-pointers, and he scored 21 in the second half. Keaton scored 20 in the second half, with 11 points in the third quarter.
Valley Oak League boys
SONORA 54, OAKDALE 25, at Sonora -- The Wildcats (11-8, 4-2) led 11-4 after one quarter and 24-7 at the half en route to an easy victory over the Mustangs (0-6). Sonora's Brenden Evans led all scorers with 15 points and added 11 rebounds and four blocks.
CERES 76, CENTRAL VALLEY 35, at Ceres -- This was no contest, as the Bulldogs (11-8, 4-2) thumped the Hawks behind Brett Sayad's 27 points (four 3-pointers) and 12 rebounds.
Trans-Valley League boys
HUGHSON 57, RIVERBANK 34, at Riverbank -- Hughson's Trevor Ferguson had three 3-pointers in the third quarter, helping the Huskies (4-2) outscore the Bruins (1-5) 24-10 after leading just 23-20 at the half. Ferguson had 14 points.
MODESTO CHR. 87, RIPON CHR. 24, at Modesto Christian -- Daniel Lemburg's 12 points led six players in double figures as MC (11-4, 5-0 TVL) defeated RC.
Western Athletic Conference boys
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 66, GUSTINE 38, at Modesto -- Mike Sidhu scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Raiders (13-6, 3-3) past the Redskins (3-13, 0-6). Matt Gardner and Matt Rios each added 11 points for Central Catholic.
LIVINGSTON 48, HILMAR 44, at Hilmar -- Justin Rodrigues hit a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left to bring the Yellowjackets (3-3) to within 44-42, but Brian Rivera of the Wolves (4-2) made all four of his foul shots at the end. Rivera finished with 16 points and Rodrigues 20 points and six steals. Quinton McCowan of Hilmar had 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Southern League boys
WATERFORD 76, DELHI 37, at Delhi -- C.J. DeDeaux scored a game-high 21 points and Kyle Hopper followed with 17 as the Wildcats (10-8, 4-3) rolled past the Hawks (3-15, 1-6). Brandon Lutz led Delhi with eight points.
Harvest Christian League boys
CALVARY TEMPLE 47, VENTURE ACADEMY 46, at Stockton -- Jamal Williams had 15 points and Gilbert Moya 14 for CT (8-6, 4-2 HCL), which never led the back-and-forth game by more than six.
MMC girls
DAVIS 47, ENOCHS 27, at Enochs -- The Spartans were in control all the way in their win over the Eagles. Meghan Devlin led the Davis scoring with 16 points.
BEYER 54, JOHANSEN 30, at Beyer -- The Patriots (4-1 MMC) played good defense and got 17 points from Julie Aiello in defeating the Vikings (0-5 MMC). Aiello nailed four 3-pointers.
MODESTO 69, DOWNEY 42, at Downey -- Vanessa Flores (13 points) connected on three 3-pointers in the second quarter for the Panthers (4-1), who used a 15-2 run in that period to pull away from the Knights (2-3).
HCL girls
BIG VALLEY CHR. 48, JIM ELLIOT CHR. 44, at Modesto -- The Lions (7-9, 3-2) came back from a 15-3 first-quarter deficit to defeat Jim Elliot Christian. Megan Palmer led BVC with 13 points.
