This weekend, the Modesto Junior College baseball team will get a look into the life of pro ball players.

On Saturday, March 26, the Pirates will host a Big 8 Conference game against Diablo Valley College at John Thurman Field, home of the Modesto Nuts, A-League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

“Our guys are really excited about the opportunity to play at such a great venue like John Thurman Field against a really, really good opponent in DVC,” Pirates coach Zeb Brayton said. “It should be a fun and exciting day and we’re really looking forward to it.”

General admission tickets are $6, $3 for students, seniors and veterans and free for MJC students and children under 10 years old. Parking will be $1.

MJC is currently 17-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Diablo Valley College is 13-10 and 3-4 in conference.

Freshman shortstop Alex Gouveia (Manteca) is posting a .407 batting average and leads the team with 35 hits and nine doubles. He ranks second in RBIs with 22, just behind freshman Mac Cabero (Pitman), who has 23.

The Pirates won the first game of the three-game series with Diablo Valley 7-0. Freshman Luke Brown led the team with three hits with a double, a triple and one RBI. They play the second game of the three-game series on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

“DVC, like every other team in the Big 8 Conference, is really good,” Brayton said. “They have a lot of good players. They do a good job of coaching their players and we expect it to be very competitive.

“The Big 8 is the best conference in California, so every time you play against a Big 8 opponent, you’re going to get a quality game.”

According to the latest California Coaches Poll, Modesto is No. 8 in NorCal, while DVC is No. 12.

John Thurman Field is located at 601 Neece Drive, Modesto, CA 95351.
