Kadry on Bowling: It’s time to honor bowlers in Modesto

It’s that time of the year when Modesto bowlers look back over the years to identify fellow bowlers who have had an impact on the local scene. The Modesto Bowling Hall of Fame has announced the opening of the nomination period for candidates.

Nominees can be submitted in one of eight categories. Recognition is in either Meritorious Service or Bowling Ability, for men or women, living or posthumous. The purpose of the Hall is to honor, pay tribute to and perpetuate the names of those bowlers who have contributed to the growth and welfare of bowling in the area.

To be eligible, a nominee must have been a member of a Modesto Bowling Association for at least 20 years, unless submitted in a posthumous category. Last year, Freddy Irvin was inducted in the Bowling Ability category and Pam Marksman was honored posthumously in the Meritorious Service category.

Nominations for the Pioneer Award are also open. The prestigious Pioneer Award is given to honor deserving members of either bowling association for their longtime commitment to bowling. To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have been an association member or sponsor for at least 30 years and supported bowling through service, sponsorship and participation.

Jim and Sheri Cole were honored last year. Hall of Fame nomination forms and Pioneer Award forms are available at McHenry Bowl and Yosemite Lanes. Deadline for submission is Jan. 31.

▪ The 2017 USBC tournaments are taking reservations online at bowl.com. The open championships will run at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas every day from Feb. 18 through July 7.

Beginning this tournament, there will be three divisions based on average: the regular division for those who average 210 and above; standard division (averages from 181-209) and classified division (averages of 180 and below).

The women’s championships are traveling to Baton Rouge, La., from April 23 through July 9. There are four divisions for teams and six divisions each for doubles and singles, based on average. Entries don’t close until the day before the tournament starts, but squads are filling up quickly so register soon if you want certain days.
