Kadry on Bowling: Brodie loses Top Dog title to Spruill

San Francisco’s Phil Spruill claimed the Top Dog title in the annual Top Dog Tournament at McHenry Bowl after leading the qualifying with a 1,436 score. Milo Coronado of Fresno qualified second at 1,426. Locals Lynn Sanders (1,403) and James Brodie (1,373) rounded out the four stepladder finalists. Brodie won his first two matches to advance to the final against Spruill but lost 257-215. Spruill earned $235. Brodie earned $130.

▪ Joe Cornish topped the men’s side of the Yosemite No-Tap Tournament, posting a 901 set. Royce Sappenfield was second with an 868, and Harold Walker was third at 867. Cornish rolled the lone no-tap 300 game. Kathy Ely was the women’s leader with an 893, Betty Gerritsen took second with an 857 and Mary Morales finished third with an 845.

▪ The team of Ted Langum, Dan Erreca and Bill Sterling won the Mixed Kegler Tournament, scoring a 2,490 team total. Erreca paced the team with his 843 set on games of 300-265-278. Larry Bolles, Betty Gerritsen and Fritz Klatt were second with a 2,381. Taking third at 2,301 was the team of Kelly Napuunoa, Earl Purcell and Bre Sandoval.

▪ The October edition of the Yosemite Lanes Scratch 6 Gamer is Sunday, Oct. 30. This is one of the last three chances to qualify for the year-end Tournament of Champions. Check-in is at 11 a.m., and tournament scoring starts at noon. Entry fee is $60 with optional brackets. Nick Kelley is leading Bowler of the Year stats after nine events with 355 points.

▪ The Modesto USBC Annual Awards and Installation Dinner is Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Elks Club on Charity Way. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30 p.m.

The new board, led by president Ed Blomdahl, will be officially installed. Board officers are vice presidents Dave Egleston and Pam Marquez and treasurer Jim Gordin. Directors serving are Sharon Aronson, Brady Walker, Freddy Irvin, Marion Roberts, Debbie Taliaferro, Jim Bass, Gary Riley, Jennifer Graham, Julie Egleston, Carol Serpa, April Walker, James Spoonemore and Rhonda Newman.

Newly elected Hall of Fame recipients will also be inducted. Freddy Irvin was nominated in the Ability category and Pam Marksman posthumously for Meritorious Service. Jim and Sheri Cole will be honored with the 2016 Pioneer Award. Scholarship winners Peter Kennedy, Allen Karle and Koryn Marquez will be acknowledged. Bowlers of the Year Nick Kelley and Joann Gonzalez will be recognized. Shining Star recipients Gracie Hickman, Marina Hair, Caiden Christensen, Scott Croce, Reanna Abreu, Yuki Claudio, Carter Christensen, Riley Murphy, Faith Miller, Vikki Walker, Ashton Russell, Andrew Tillery, Courtney Sheppard, Roman Heath and Derrick Munson will also be recognized.

Tickets are $25 and are available from any board member or at the bowl desks.

▪ Kids, get ready for the Pumpkin Shoot this Saturday, Oct. 29, at McHenry. The party runs from 2 to 4 p.m. and includes bowling to spooky music, punch, cookies, candy and a pumpkin. There will be a costume party with prizes for the funniest, scariest, best pair, cartoon/movie character, most original, cutest and ugliest. Cost is $8 per person. ▪ This Friday, the McHenry Senior Halloween No-Tap Tournament rolls at 1 p.m. Potluck is at noon and check-in starts at 12:30 p.m.
