Karen Ohl: Lacking supernatural solution to snatching, give women more pockets

Re “Just after robbery, arrest in series of purse snatchings” (Front page, Aug. 26): Women’s clothing designers can eliminate violent purse snatching by including practical zipper front pockets on all women’s clothing. Of course, one drawback might be retraining purse manufacturers for new jobs. Also, women glued to purses is such a strong cultural image, expect resistance to relinquish them.

I love the Dean Koontz story of a thief who knocked down an elderly woman, grabbing her purse. Safe in his apartment, he reached inside the bag searching for valuables. Even with his entire arm inside the purse, he couldn’t find the bottom. A cold hand grabbed his greedy one. A horrible dark little creature popped out, chasing him around the room. He ran outside to find his neighborhood gone, only empty darkness. The nasty creature caught him, dragging him into the bottomless purse. Minutes later, the elderly woman tottered in to reclaim her purse.
