Charla Zuhlke: Sunday’s Bee included reasons to cheer and to weep

Re “It’s a crime retirement study didn’t deal more with safety” (Page 1B, Aug. 21): Reading Sunday’s paper is always eventful! The article by reporter Deke Farrow was one of the most depressing I have read. It is hard for me to believe he couldn’t have come up with some Facebook feedback that might have been somewhat positive!

On the other hand, the special section “Meet 20 rising stars helping build the future of Modesto, Stanislaus County” or “Twenty Under Forty” was one of the most encouraging things I’ve ever read in The Bee! Thanks so much for including it. I feel blessed to have these young people involved in and being a part of businesses in our community. Reading their comments on “what do you like most about living here?” totally turned things around about Modesto, and the feedback we so often encounter. The things they mentioned made me look even more closely at all the great things our community has to offer. We should be very encouraged by having these men and women as leaders in our future; we can learn a lot from them.
