Weather alert affecting Northeastern Trinity Sunday night - wind gusts reaching 30 mph

The NWS Eureka CA issued a report at 10:32 p.m. on Sunday for strong thunderstorms until 11 p.m. for Northeastern Trinity.

Residents can look for wind gusts of up to 30 mph.

"At 10:32 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm over Carrville, or 21 miles northeast of Weaverville, moving west at 20 mph," comments the NWS. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects."

The alert is for Carrville and Trinity Center.

According to the NWS, "Monitor the weather situation closely and be alert for threatening weather conditions. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle."

This alert is in effect until 11 p.m.

How to react when facing a lightning hazard?

Lightning hits the United States approximately 25 million times annually. The majority of these strikes happen during the summer, causing around 20 fatalities each year, according to the NWS. The likelihood of lightning increases as a thunderstorm gets closer and reaches its highest point when the storm is directly overhead. This risk decreases as the storm moves away.

  • Keep a distance from tall, isolated trees or other elevated objects. If in a forest, stay close to lower trees.
  • When in a group, space out to prevent the current from transferring between individuals.
  • When camping in an open environment, select a campsite in a valley, ravine, or low region. Just remember, tents do not offer protection from lightning.
  • Keep a distance from water, wet articles, and metal objects. While water and metal do not draw lightning, they are proficient conductors of electricity.

What to do in the rain on the road?

  • Turn on headlights - Even in daylight, using headlights can help improve visibility and let other drivers know where you are.
  • On the road - Drive in the middle lanes and stay on high ground. Rainwater tends to stockpile on the edges of roads.
  • Keep clear of puddles - Driving through puddles or low rainwater areas can cause vehicles to hydroplane or skid out of control
  • Don't tail large vehicles closely - Trucks or buses can kick up a water spray that obstructs visibility.
  • Steer clear of flooded areas - When coming to a flooded road, turn around and head back. Flash flooding currents are strong and can sweep drivers off roadways. Driving through deep water can also affect a vehicle's mechanical and electrical systems.

What is hydroplaning?
