On Wednesday at 12:06 a.m. a freeze watch was issued by the NWS Reno NV valid from Thursday 11 p.m. until Friday 8 a.m. for Surprise Valley California.
The NWS informs, "Sub-freezing temperatures with lows 20 to 25 degrees Friday morning."
"Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Blowing dust downwind of desert sinks may reduce visibilities. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing," explains the NWS. "Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly."
This watch is in effect until Friday at 8 a.m.
What to do if there is a freeze watch or warning
Freeze warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary), when low temperatures are expected to be 29-32 degrees. If there is a potential for temperatures to fall into these thresholds, a freeze watch may be issued a few days ahead of time.
According to the NWS, if a freeze warning or watch is issued for your area, there is little you can do to protect plants. If you can move your sensitive plants inside, do so because the freeze will likely kill them, depending on the severity of conditions.
