A Friday deadline looms for candidates in Stanislaus County to get their names on the June 7 primary ballot. The nomination period extends to March 16 if the incumbent is not running for reelection.

Voters will choose representatives in a dizzying array of redrawn districts for congressional, state and county offices.

The boundaries for Stanislaus County supervisorial elections were not changed too dramatically by the recent redistricting process.

Board of Supervisors chairman Terry Withrow, who’s seeking a fourth term in District 3, is challenged by Modesto Councilman Tony Madrigal.

Appointed Supervisor Mani Grewal is running for the District 4 seat against Melissa Kelly; in addition, Joel DeGraef pulled papers.

County Sheriff Jeff Dirkse is running unopposed for a second four-year term since Sgt. Juan Alanis announced last month he was switching to the race in the new 22nd state Assembly District.

Jeff Laugero, a chief deputy district attorney, is the only candidate so far to succeed District Attorney Birgit Fladager, who is not running. Laugero resigned from the Escalon City Council in December in order to move to this county and seek the office.

The incumbents for other county offices including superintendent of schools, treasurer-tax collector, assessor, auditor-controller and clerk-recorder were unopposed as of 5 p.m. Monday.

California will hold open primaries June 7 for congressional and state offices, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the November election, regardless of party affiliation. According to county election offices and Ballotpedia, the candidates include:

Assembly District 22: Republicans Juan Alanis, Joel Gutierrez Campos, Sean Harrison and Guadalupe “Lupita” Salazar, and Democrats Chad Condit and Jessica Self.

Assembly District 9: Republican Heath Flora.

State Senate District 4: Republicans former Congressman George Radanovich, former Ceres Councilman Jeff McKay, Jack Griffith, Steven Bailey and Jolene Daly and Democrats Tim Robertson and Marie Alvarado-Gil.

Fifth Congressional District: Republicans Tom McClintock, Nathan Magsig, Juan Estrada, Kelsten Obert and Benjamin Stopper, Democrat Mike Barkley, and Steve Wozniak and Clarissa Powell, who have no party preference.

Ninth Congressional District: Democrats Josh Harder, Harpreet Chima and Karena Feng. Republicans Jonathan Madison, Tom Patti and James Shoemaker.

Thirteenth Congressional District: Democrats Adam Gray, Phil Arballo and Angelina Sigala-Rosario, and Republican David Giglio. John Duarte pulled papers.

The incumbents are not opposed in seven Stanislaus Superior Court judgeships that are up for election.
