A revered elected official in Denton County, Texas, was hurt in a double-stabbing that resulted in her husband’s death, authorities say.

The grandson of Bobbie J. Mitchell, Denton County Commissioner for Precinct 3, is now charged with murder and aggravated assault following the April 21 incident in a Lewisville home, according to the Lewisville Police Department.

Mitchell, who is also the former mayor of Lewisville, was hospitalized and is listed in stable condition, police said. Her husband, Fred Mitchell, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A motive for the stabbings is unclear. Police said the grandson, 23-year-old Mitchell Blake Reinacher, was taken into custody at the scene.

“The crime scene remains active as LPD crime scene investigators and detectives continue processing evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack,” police said.

Reinacher is one of Bobbie Mitchell’s nine grandchildren. She was the first Black mayor of Lewisville, holding the position from 1993 to 2000.

She has held the position of Denton County commissioner since 2000.

“The City is holding our Commissioner and her family close to our hearts,” Lewisville Mayor TJ Gilmore said in a statement. “We are grateful for the quick response from our Police, Fire, and the hospital staff who have taken great care of Commissioner Mitchell. If you’ve ever been at an event where Bobbie has prayed over you, please lift her and the family up as she has lifted our community.”

Denton County Judge Andy Eads referred to the double stabbing an “unfathomable tragedy.”

“I have known her and her beloved husband, Fred, since childhood, growing up in Lewisville,” Eads said. “I have always appreciated Fred sharing Bobbie with the public all these 34 years. Fred will be greatly missed.”

Lewisville is about a 35-mile drive northeast from Fort Worth.
