A large sinkhole believed to be related to a ruptured sewer line has closed a portion of a Turlock thoroughfare.
West Tuolumne Road was closed Thursday between North Golden State Boulevard and North Tully Road. There was no estimate at this time on when it will reopen, said Turlock Police Sgt. Mike Parmley.
The mouth of the hole is in the center divide of Tuolumne and the erosion continues deep underneath the road, according to Parmley. He said the hole is about 100 feet long by 40 feet wide and as much as 14 feet deep.
“There is no known threat to the community or the residents in the area,” according to a press release from the department. “As of now, the road has been closed to assess the damage and prevent any injury resulting from travel on the roadway.”
Police are asking motorists to use Fulkerth Road or West Monte Vista Avenue as alternate routes.
