Art, graphic communications scholarships available
Applications are available for college scholarships designed for Stanislaus County students majoring in graphic communications or art.
Up to $3,000 in Al Barr Memorial Scholarships will be awarded. The program, now in its 15th year, is for high school graduates and Modesto Junior College students who are enrolled in, or have been accepted by, a four-year college or university as a graphic communications or art major.
Since the program’s inception in 2000, more than $25,000 in scholarships has been awarded.
Barr, a former newspaper graphic artist and award-winning watercolorist, died in 2000. After working at The Modesto Bee and the Pasadena Star News, Barr opened his own graphic design studio in Modesto.
Barr was a past president and 30-year member of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club, which directs the scholarship fund.
The application deadline is April 17. Requirements include a completed application, two samples of original artwork, two or more letters of recommendation, a copy of current high school or college transcripts and a one-page letter on why the applicant seeks a career in graphic communications or art.
Students can download application information at the North Modesto Kiwanis Club website, www.northmodestokiwanis.org, and go to the scholarship page.
