Defendants plead not guilty in Turlock deadly shooting

Two defendants charged in the shooting death of a 37-year-old Turlock father made their first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon.

Devenae Price, 25, of Ceres and Kelley Trezvant, 18, of Modesto pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with Falane Jones’ death. He was gunned down April 23 at an apartment complex near Donnelly Park.

Price is charged with murder, while his girlfriend Trezvant is charged with being an accessory. Deanadranae Campbell, 19, of Livingston and Kevin Barnes, 19, of Modesto also face accessory charges but have not made their first court appearance.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Douglas Raynaud told a judge Wednesday that Price is the suspected shooter, and Trezvant helped him evade capture. The prosecutor said Trezvant was apprehended carrying an ammunition magazine that would fit the type of gun used to kill Jones.

Matthew Yeoman, Trezvant’s attorney, told the judge he would like to see the police reports first before arguing over bail. He said the usual amount for an accessory charge is $25,000.

Stanislaus Superior Court Judge Marie Silveira set Trezvant’s bail at $100,000, calling her charge the most egregious of accessory charges. But she will give Yeoman another chance to seek a reduced bail.

Price and Trezvant will return to court Wednesday to further discuss their bail amounts. Price will remain in custody without bail until then.

The shooting occurred about 9:45 p.m. at the Villas Parkside apartments in the 300 block of West Hawkeye Avenue. Turlock police said Jones had just arrived with his uncle to visit another relative when he was shot four times as he stood next to his car.

Alameda County sheriff’s deputies spotted the four wanted defendants April 26. All four ran from a car following a short pursuit about 2 a.m. in San Leandro. Barnes escaped, but the other three were apprehended. San Francisco police found Barnes on Sunday night and arrested him.
