Two Sonora women were arrested this week after police say they assaulted a bus driver, leaving the victim injured.

The incident happened around 4:35 p.m. Monday on Stockton Road, according to the Sonora Police Department.

Police said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting an assault on a bus driver. Officers arrived at the scene but were told the suspects had fled the area.

Investigators said the suspects left a cellphone at the scene, which helped officers quickly identify them as 19-year-old Briana Hicks and 32-year-old Cathy Scotland.

According to Sonora police, the incident occurred on a city transit bus.

Police spokesperson Michael DeRosa said the driver had a prior personal history with the two women and told them he was uncomfortable allowing them to ride the bus. When the driver asked them to leave, the situation escalated and he was assaulted.

Police arrested the women around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday. Both were booked on suspicion of felony battery on a bus driver causing injury.

Authorities said the driver suffered injuries but declined to release details about his medical condition.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Sonora Police Department.
