Modesto police seek second suspect in FoodMaxx parking lot homicide

Police were seeking a second suspect Friday night in the shooting death of a Modesto man in the FoodMaxx parking lot the previous day.

The suspect, Sailiuta Matau, 32, “should be considered armed and dangerous,” said a Facebook post from the Modesto Police Department.

He is suspected of taking part in the shooting of Donald Patterson, 57, at about 5:45 a.m. Thursday. The victim was a regular customer of the grocery store on West Briggsmore Avenue, police said.

Another suspect, Kahlil Thorne, 19, of Modesto, was arrested Thursday afternoon. He remained in Stanislaus County Jail as of Friday night on charges that include murder and attempted robbery.

Friday night’s post said Matau also faces a murder charge. “If you see Matau, please do not attempt to contact him, call 911,” police said.

Tips about the case also can be relayed to Detective Darien Wilson at wilsond@modestopd.com or Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636.

Thorne is being held without bail.
