A retired Foster Farms employee has been convicted of workers’ compensation insurance fraud, the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office reported.

Gurmail Singh was employed in the company’s processing facility in Livingston and reported an on-the-job injury in November 2014. He filed a workers’ compensation claim and consequently received medical treatment and paid benefits, a news release says.

Singh, a resident of Stanislaus County, retired from Foster Farms in June 2015 and continued to receive benefits.

During a subsequent investigation, it was alleged he gave false statements and material misrepresentations during his deposition and at a medical appointment, the DA’s Office said. “Singh misrepresented facts as it related to his physical abilities and limitations associated with his injury and prior medical history.”

On Feb. 28, Singh pleaded no contest to insurance fraud. He was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay Foster Farms $3,200 for reimbursement of investigation costs.

The case was a joint investigation between Foster Farms’ Special Investigation Unit and the Amador County District Attorney’s Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit, the news release says. The fraud unit investigates cases in Stanislaus County through a grant provided by the state Department of Insurance.

Anyone who believes workers’ compensation fraud is being committed is urged to call the California Department of Insurance Fraud Hotline at 916-854-5700 or the Amador County District Attorney’s Office at 209-223-6444.
