Man wanted for Mariposa County attempted murder caught by Modesto police at Walmart

A man wanted for attempted murder in Mariposa County was arrested by Modesto police while leaving a Walmart Saturday morning.

Modesto Police Lt. Chris Adams said officers were called to the Walmart on McHenry Avenue at about 10:50 a.m. for a reported sighting of Jeron Roberts. Friday evening the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office had put out a bulletin asking for the public’s help in finding Roberts who they said allegedly shot a man.

The 41-year-old was last seen Feb. 14 in Greeley Hill, where he allegedly got into a physical fight with a man and then shot him, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. The victim was reportedly flown to a hospital, but his condition has not been released.

The Mariposa Sheriff’s officials said Roberts, a parolee who reportedly suffered from mental illness and had gang affiliations, fled the scene and was considered armed and dangerous.

Modesto police arrived at the Walmart as Roberts was leaving the store. He was arrested without incident in the parking lot and booked on a homicide warrant, Adams said. A second subject he was with at the time was detained but has not been charged with anything. The fire alarm at the Modesto Walmart was also pulled around the same time, but Adams said the two incidents do not appear connected.
