A traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Stanislaus County on Thursday afternoon led to the seizure of 85 pounds of methamphetamine and the arrest of a West Sacramento man, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Olsen said an officer stopped a northbound Chevrolet sedan for a “mechanical violation.” Olsen would not release the exact location or nature of the stop.

During the stop, the officer’s K9, Pakito, alerted to the presence of drugs in the vehicle, Olsen said. A subsequent search of the Chevrolet netted 85 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated value of $110,000 to $225,000, he said.

Olsen would not release the suspect’s name, only his age and charges, which are transportation and possession of methamphetamine.

A search of booking records shows only one 24-year-old man with those charges was booked by the CHP on Thursday: Simeone Hernandez Jr. He is being held on $1 million bail.
