Theft of an automatic teller machine doesn’t result in getting any money, police say
Two Modesto residents suspected of stealing an automatic teller machine from a Gustine deli dumped it alongside an orchard after they couldn’t figure out how to open it.
The burglary occurred around 4 a.m. on Dec. 17 at Borrelli’s Italian Deli on Jensen Road, according to Gustine police. The front door had been pried open and the ATM was taken.
After further investigation and reviewing video surveillance from the deli, officers got a license plate number from the suspects’ vehicle. They found it was registered to a home at a trailer park on Jantzen Road, east of Modesto, and that is also was associated with another burglary in Modesto, according to Gustine Lt. Sam Joseph.
Officers went to the home and found a man and woman who both were on probation. They searched the home and the vehicle, where they found part of the ATM that had been stolen from Borrelli’s, Joseph said.
Officers also located other items connected to the crime in the vehicle, he said.
Gustine police were contacted by Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies, who located the ATM about three miles northwest of the trailer park, dumped in an orchard along Wellsford Road.
Joseph said the suspects had tried to get into the ATM but were unsuccessful.
Jenny Ritter, 36, and Margarito Rojo, 37, were arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and possession of stolen property.
